From time to time, we are asked to produce stock imagery for certain products lit in a packshot studio environment. This time we dug our teeth into yet another USB modem for Bredbandsbolaget (via Acne Advertising).

Now, why will we not simply just take a photo of the actual product, you may ask… Well, for starters, the product may not exist yet. But in case that the product exists, there are a couple of reasons for us spending hours and hours on sculpting the model in 3D and then apply advanced surface materials which mimic the laws of our physical world – as well as adding a grain of “larger than life” to that…

One scenario could involve a client’s need of having the product available to an in-house marketing department, which will need nice imagery, shot from multiple angles, to be used in ads of different kinds. Another scenario, and maybe the most common reason for producing a product/packshot digitally, is that we can easily place a newly released product – from an existing line of products – shot from the same camera angle, in the same lighting as the previous products, without the need of maintaining a studio setup with cameras, bouncers etc. This means we can portrait all products of a product line in a homogen manner throughout e.g. a website or in an ad. And last, and maybe the most obvious scenario, is when we would like to animate the product for a commercial or even an online banner.
